Since the conventional syringe of the Sequential Injection apparatus available at that time tolerated only a low pressure (50 psi) the work had to be carried been using short (25 mm or 50 mm) monolithic columns. However, such short columns were capable of resolving of only two or three components, as demonstrated on separation of two types of pesticides (permethrin and phenoxycarb) using a 10 mm monolithic C18 silica column (Chocholouš 2008).
Very short columns can be operated at such low back pressure that it becomes possible to use them even in a Flow Injection apparatus. Applications like that have been demonstrated for preservatives (parabens) in cosmetic samples (Garcia Jimenez 2010), as well as for analysis of methylxantines in coffee (Santos 2012).
